Death tarot card meaning

Death

What the card shows

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black banner marked with a white rose. A king lies fallen beneath the hooves, a child and a young woman kneel, and a bishop stands with his hands together. In the distance a boat moves along a river, and the sun rises between two towers.

Death upright

Death almost never means a physical death, and it is not a prediction that anyone will die. It is the card of endings that make room: a chapter closing, a role finishing, an old way of living giving way to the next one. Upright, it says that something is over, and that accepting it lets the new thing begin. Notice the sunrise in the background.

Keywords: endings, transition, clearing space, change

Death reversed

Reversed, an ending is being held off. You may be keeping something going after it has stopped working, whether a job, a habit or a relationship, because the not-knowing that follows feels worse. The card is not cruel about this. It suggests that the delay is costing something, and asks what would change if you let the ending come.

Keywords: resisting an ending, stagnation, a slow goodbye

In love

In love, Death describes a relationship changing form: an end, or the close of one phase so another can begin. Couples who stay together pass through it too. Reversed, it can point at holding on to something that has already finished, and asks what you are afraid the ending would mean.

At work

At work, this card can describe a role ending, a project closing or a career changing direction. It favours finishing cleanly over drifting. Reversed, it points at staying in a position you have outgrown, and suggests one practical step towards the exit.

When you are deciding

When deciding, Death asks what has already ended, whether or not it has been announced. Choices are easier once you stop protecting the past. Pick the option that fits the life you have now, not the one you had.
