Minor Arcana - Pentacles

Four of Pentacles tarot card meaning

Four of Pentacles

What the card shows

A crowned man sits outside a town, gripping a coin against his chest with both arms. Another coin rests on his crown, and he keeps one under each foot. Behind him the town's towers rise. He is not going anywhere, and he is not sharing.

Four of Pentacles upright

The Four of Pentacles is the card of holding on. It describes security, saving and control, and how easily they can tip into fear of losing what you have. Upright, it can mean sensible caution with money and resources. It also asks whether the grip is so tight that nothing new can come in, including joy.

Keywords: security, control, saving, holding on

Four of Pentacles reversed

Reversed, the grip changes. It can describe loosening up, becoming more generous, or letting go of something you were clutching. It can also describe holding on even harder out of fear. The card asks what you are protecting, and whether it still needs that much protection.

Keywords: letting go, generosity, fear of loss

In love

Possessiveness, holding back emotionally, or a relationship that feels safe and rather closed. The card asks for a little more openness. Reversed, it describes loosening control and letting the other person in.

At work

Protecting your position, careful budgeting, reluctance to delegate. The card favours stability and a sensible reserve. Reversed, it suggests sharing knowledge or resources rather than guarding them.

When you are deciding

Ask whether you are choosing from security or from fear. The Four of Pentacles favours protecting what matters, and asks you to notice when protection has become a cage.
