The Magician tarot card meaning

What the card shows
A figure in a red robe stands behind a table, one hand raising a wand towards the sky and the other pointing at the ground. On the table lie a cup, a sword, a coin marked with a star and a wand: one object for each suit of the deck. A sideways figure eight floats over the head, and roses and lilies grow in the foreground.
The Magician upright
The Magician says that the tools are already on the table. It is a card of skill put to use, the moment when knowing how becomes doing it. Upright, it points at an ability you have been underrating, and at the gap between having a resource and actually picking it up. The work is concentration: one thing at a time, with all four tools within reach.
Keywords: skill, focus, initiative, using what you have
The Magician reversed
Reversed, the same tools are on the table and nothing is being made with them. Sometimes that is scattered attention, with too many projects started and none carried through. Sometimes it is the opposite problem: talk standing in for work, a pitch that sounds better than the thing behind it. Either way, the card asks what one concrete thing would prove the skill is real.
Keywords: scattered effort, untapped ability, talk over substance
In love
In love, The Magician favours saying what you want instead of hoping it is guessed. It is the card of making the first move, planning the evening, starting the conversation. Reversed, it can describe charm doing the job that honesty should be doing, on either side.
At work
At work, this is a strong card for pitching, presenting and building something with your own hands. It suits a person with more ability than position. The practical advice is to choose one project and give it your full attention, rather than spreading yourself over four.
When you are deciding
When deciding, The Magician asks what you can do with what you already hold, before you go looking for more. A choice that uses your existing skills is usually the stronger one. If the plan depends on a tool you do not yet have, name that gap first.
