Nine of Wands tarot card meaning

What the card shows
A man with a bandaged head leans on a staff and looks warily over his shoulder. Behind him, eight more staves stand in a row like a fence. He has clearly been in a fight already, and he looks ready for another, tired but still upright.
Nine of Wands upright
The Nine of Wands is the card of the last effort, when you are tired, a little bruised and nearly there. It describes resilience: you have been through enough to be wary, and you are still standing. Upright, it asks you to hold on a little longer, protect what you have built, and trust that you have more left than you think.
Keywords: resilience, persistence, last stand, caution
Nine of Wands reversed
Reversed, the wariness has become exhaustion or suspicion. You may be so braced for the next blow that you cannot rest, or so tired that you are ready to quit just before the finish. The card asks whether the threat is still real, and whether someone could stand guard for a while so you can recover.
Keywords: exhaustion, paranoia, giving up close to the end
In love
Guardedness after past hurt, or a relationship that has come through a hard time. The card suits patience with your own caution. Reversed, it can describe defences that now keep good people out.
At work
Persistence through a hard project, the final push before a deadline. The card favours protecting your time and resources. Reversed, it suggests asking for help before exhaustion makes the choice for you.
When you are deciding
Ask how close you are to the end. If you are nearly there, the Nine of Wands favours finishing. If you are not, it asks whether you need rest before the next stage, not a decision made in fatigue.
