Strength tarot card meaning

Strength

What the card shows

A woman in a white dress, crowned with flowers, rests her hands on a lion's jaws. Her touch is gentle and the lion's head is lowered. A sideways figure eight floats above her, and a chain of flowers loops from her waist to the animal's neck. The setting is open country under a pale yellow sky, with a blue mountain far off.

Strength upright

Strength is not the card of force. It is the card of patience applied to something powerful: a fear, a temper, an appetite, a difficult person. Upright, it says that steadiness and kindness will do more here than effort. It also points at a courage you may not credit yourself with, the quiet kind that keeps going without needing to be noticed.

Keywords: courage, patience, gentleness, inner strength

Strength reversed

Reversed, the lion has the upper hand, or you have tried to win with force and are worn out. Self-doubt sits here, as does the exhaustion of being strong for too long without rest. The card does not ask you to be braver. It asks you to be gentler with yourself while you find your footing again.

Keywords: self-doubt, force over patience, exhaustion

In love

In love, Strength favours patience, warmth and the kind of steadiness that lets someone else relax. It suits a relationship working through a hard patch without drama. Reversed, it can describe someone holding everything together alone, and suggests letting the other person carry some of it.

At work

At work, this card describes handling difficult people and situations calmly. It favours persuasion over pressure, and endurance over speed. Reversed, it points at the cost of always being the reliable one, and asks whether your workload can be sustained.

When you are deciding

When deciding, Strength asks whether you are choosing from calm or from fear. If fear is driving, wait until it settles before you commit. The patient option is often the braver one, even when it looks like doing nothing.
