Minor Arcana - Swords

Eight of Swords tarot card meaning

Eight of Swords

What the card shows

A woman stands blindfolded and loosely bound, surrounded by eight swords stuck upright in the muddy ground. A castle sits on a hill behind her. Look closely: the swords do not enclose her completely, and her feet are free. She could walk out if she could see.

Eight of Swords upright

The Eight of Swords is the card of feeling trapped by circumstances that are less fixed than they seem. It describes fear, self-doubt and thoughts that make the walls look higher. Upright, it does not deny the difficulty. It asks you to check which of the bonds are real and which are beliefs, because some of them come off more easily than you think.

Keywords: feeling trapped, self-limitation, helplessness, fear

Eight of Swords reversed

Reversed, the blindfold slips. It can describe seeing a way out, letting go of a limiting belief, or asking for help to get free. The card favours that first step, however small it seems, and notices that the bonds were looser than they felt.

Keywords: release, new perspective, freeing yourself

In love

Feeling stuck in a relationship, or held back by fear of being hurt again. The card asks what you believe your options are. Reversed, it describes freedom and a new perspective.

At work

Feeling trapped in a job, overwhelmed by restrictions, unable to see options. The card suggests listing them anyway. Reversed, it points at finding a way forward that was there all along.

When you are deciding

If you feel there are no options, check that thought before you trust it. The Eight of Swords suggests asking someone outside the situation what they can see that you cannot.
