Minor Arcana - Cups

Five of Cups tarot card meaning

Five of Cups

What the card shows

A figure in a long black cloak stands with head bowed, looking at three cups spilled on the ground. Behind the figure, out of sight, two cups still stand upright. A river runs past, and a bridge leads over it to a house in the distance.

Five of Cups upright

The Five of Cups is the card of grief and disappointment. Something has been lost or has not gone as hoped, and it hurts. Upright, it does not rush you through that. It acknowledges the loss. It also notices, gently, that not everything is spilled: two cups still stand, and the bridge is still there for when you are ready.

Keywords: loss, regret, grief, disappointment

Five of Cups reversed

Reversed, the figure starts to turn around. It can describe accepting a loss, forgiving yourself or someone else, and noticing what you still have. It can also describe grief that has gone unacknowledged for too long. The card asks you to honour what was lost and to look at what remains.

Keywords: acceptance, moving on, finding what remains

In love

Heartbreak, regret over a relationship, or dwelling on what went wrong. The card gives you permission to be sad. Reversed, it describes healing and a readiness to love again.

At work

A setback, a failed project, a disappointment at work. The card favours learning from it rather than replaying it. Reversed, it points at recovering and finding the opportunity that is still there.

When you are deciding

Do not decide only from regret. The Five of Cups asks you to grieve what went wrong, then list the cups still standing. The choice belongs with those.
