Minor Arcana - Cups

Four of Cups tarot card meaning

Four of Cups

What the card shows

A young man sits under a tree with his arms folded, looking down at three cups lined up on the grass in front of him. From a cloud beside him, a hand offers a fourth cup. He does not seem to see it, or does not care to.

Four of Cups upright

The Four of Cups is the card of being unmoved. It describes boredom, dissatisfaction or withdrawal: what is in front of you no longer interests you, and you are not sure what would. Upright, it can be useful reflection. It can also mean missing an offer because you have stopped looking up. The card asks you to notice what is being held out to you.

Keywords: apathy, contemplation, discontent, a missed offer

Four of Cups reversed

Reversed, the young man looks up. It can describe coming out of a flat period, accepting help, or finding interest in something again. It can also describe a decision to stop waiting for something better and engage with what is here. The card favours that turn, however small.

Keywords: renewed interest, acceptance, saying yes again

In love

Feeling flat or uninterested, taking a partner for granted, or overlooking someone who is interested in you. The card asks you to look again. Reversed, it describes rekindled interest and openness to connection.

At work

Boredom, disengagement, turning down opportunities without considering them. The card favours honest reflection on what you want next. Reversed, it suggests that a new offer or idea deserves a proper look.

When you are deciding

If nothing appeals, check whether you have actually looked at every option. The Four of Cups suggests asking what you are waiting for, and whether it is on its way at all.
