The Hierophant tarot card meaning

The Hierophant

What the card shows

A religious teacher sits between two grey pillars, wearing a triple crown and red robes. One hand is raised in blessing; the other holds a staff topped with a triple cross. Two crossed keys lie at his feet, and two followers kneel before him with their backs to us. It is a picture of teaching passed down, from the one who knows to the ones who are learning.

The Hierophant upright

The Hierophant is the card of what is learned from others: traditions, institutions, mentors and the rules a group agrees to share. Upright, it favours the established route, such as a course, a qualification or a teacher, because sometimes that route exists for good reasons. It also speaks to belonging, the comfort of a community that shares your values.

Keywords: tradition, learning, belonging, shared values

The Hierophant reversed

Reversed, the tradition has stopped fitting. You may be following a rule out of habit rather than belief, or feeling pressure to conform to something you have quietly outgrown. The card does not insist that you rebel. It asks you to tell the difference between a custom you have chosen and one you have only inherited.

Keywords: questioning convention, your own path, empty ritual

In love

In love, The Hierophant points at commitment in its familiar forms: meeting the family, moving in, marriage, shared rituals. It favours a relationship built on common values. Reversed, it can describe pressure to follow a script that one of you does not want, and suggests discussing which pieces you actually choose.

At work

At work, this card favours training, mentoring and learning how an organisation really works before trying to change it. A good teacher is worth seeking out. Reversed, it suits the person whose best idea does not fit the usual channels.

When you are deciding

When deciding, The Hierophant asks what people you respect would do, and whether their reasons apply to you. Advice from experience is valuable. It is still advice, and the choice remains yours.
