The Lovers tarot card meaning

The Lovers

What the card shows

A man and a woman stand naked in a garden, with an angel spreading its wings above them in the clouds and a bright sun behind. Behind the woman is a tree of fruit with a serpent wound around it; behind the man, a tree whose leaves are flames. A single mountain rises between them in the distance.

The Lovers upright

The Lovers is about love, and it is also about choice. The card describes a union, romantic or otherwise, that rests on shared values, and a decision that says something about who you are. Upright, it favours honesty between two people and agreement between what you want and what you do. The choice it points at is rarely trivial, which is why it deserves your full attention.

Keywords: love, union, values, a meaningful choice

The Lovers reversed

Reversed, the two sides are out of step. It may be a relationship where one person gives more than the other, or a choice made to please someone rather than because you believe in it. It can also describe a decision being avoided, in the hope that it makes itself. The card asks where your values and your actions have drifted apart.

Keywords: imbalance, misalignment, avoiding a choice

In love

In love this is one of the warmest cards in the deck: attraction, connection and being chosen by someone you also choose. It does not promise permanence. It asks that the relationship be honest, and that both of you are in it by choice. Reversed, it points at an imbalance that needs naming.

At work

At work, The Lovers is about partnerships and about values. It can describe a collaboration that suits both sides, or a job offer that tests what you care about. If an option looks good and sits badly with you, the card says that unease is information.

When you are deciding

When deciding, The Lovers asks which option you could defend to the person you most respect, including yourself. A choice between two good things is still a real choice. Pick the one that matches what you say you value, and let the other one go properly.
