Minor Arcana - Wands

King of Wands tarot card meaning

King of Wands

What the card shows

A king sits on a throne decorated with lions and salamanders, holding a tall flowering wand. A small salamander crawls on the ground beside his feet. He leans slightly forward, looking to one side, as though he is already thinking about what comes next.

King of Wands upright

The King of Wands is the card of the visionary leader. He sees the bigger picture, makes the decision and inspires people to follow. Upright, it favours taking charge, setting the direction and turning ideas into enterprises. It suits anyone ready to lead rather than wait to be asked.

Keywords: vision, leadership, boldness, entrepreneurship

King of Wands reversed

Reversed, the vision outpaces the patience. It can describe a leader who will not listen, plans too big for the resources behind them, or a temper that frightens people off. The card asks whether the people expected to carry out the vision have been asked what they think of it.

Keywords: impatience, domineering, unrealistic plans

In love

A partner with drive and ambition, or a relationship led with confidence. The card suits honesty about shared goals. Reversed, it can describe one person setting the agenda without asking, and suggests making room for the other's plans.

At work

Founding something, leading a team, owning a big decision. The card favours vision backed by follow-through. Reversed, it warns against impatience and against expecting others to move at your speed.

When you are deciding

Make the call. The King of Wands favours decisiveness once you have the overview. Then explain the reasons to the people affected, because a vision nobody understands goes nowhere.
