Minor Arcana - Swords

Queen of Swords tarot card meaning

Queen of Swords

What the card shows

A queen sits on a throne carved with butterflies, facing to one side. She holds a sword upright in one hand and raises the other, open, as if inviting someone to speak. Clouds gather below her, and a single bird flies high above. Her face is calm and serious.

Queen of Swords upright

The Queen of Swords is the card of clear, honest judgement. She has known difficulty, and it has made her perceptive rather than bitter. Upright, it favours direct communication, independence and fair boundaries. She listens, weighs the truth and says what she thinks without unnecessary cruelty.

Keywords: clarity, honesty, independence, clear boundaries

Queen of Swords reversed

Reversed, the clarity has turned cold. It can describe harsh judgement, bitterness after hurt, or words used to wound. It can also describe someone so guarded that nobody gets close. The card asks whether your honesty still has kindness in it.

Keywords: coldness, bitterness, harsh judgement

In love

Honesty, independence within a relationship, or clarity after heartbreak. The card suits clear boundaries. Reversed, it can describe coldness or criticism that pushes love away.

At work

Fair leadership, editing, analysis, direct feedback. The card favours objectivity and a clear account of what went wrong. Reversed, it warns against being so critical that people stop bringing you their ideas.

When you are deciding

Look at the facts as they are, not as you wish them to be. The Queen of Swords favours the honest option, delivered fairly, and asks you to include your own needs in the account.
