Minor Arcana - Swords

King of Swords tarot card meaning

King of Swords

What the card shows

A king sits on a throne decorated with butterflies and crescent moons, facing straight out. He holds a sword upright, slightly tilted. Tall trees stand behind him, and two birds fly in the sky. His expression is steady and unreadable.

King of Swords upright

The King of Swords is the card of clear thinking in authority. He decides on evidence and principle, not on mood. Upright, it describes fairness, expertise and the ability to make difficult decisions calmly. It favours logic, ethics and saying exactly what you mean.

Keywords: authority, intellect, truth, fair judgement

King of Swords reversed

Reversed, the intellect is used against people. It can describe manipulation, cold judgement, or rules applied without fairness. It can also describe overthinking until no decision gets made. The card asks whether reason is serving the truth or just winning the argument.

Keywords: manipulation, cruelty, abuse of power

In love

A thoughtful, fair partner, or the need for clear agreements. The card favours honest conversation. Reversed, it can describe emotional coldness or someone who argues to control.

At work

Leadership, law, analysis, strategic decisions. The card favours expertise, integrity and reasons you can explain. Reversed, it warns against using authority unfairly, or hiding behind the rules.

When you are deciding

Decide on principle. The King of Swords asks what is fair and true, then favours that option, even if it is not the easiest one to announce.
