Minor Arcana - Cups

Seven of Cups tarot card meaning

Seven of Cups

What the card shows

A figure seen only in silhouette faces seven cups floating in the clouds. Each cup holds something different: a head, a glowing veiled figure, a snake, a castle, jewels, a wreath and a dragon. It is impossible to tell which ones are real.

Seven of Cups upright

The Seven of Cups is the card of too many options and not enough clarity. It describes daydreams, temptations and possibilities that look wonderful from a distance. Upright, it asks you to tell the difference between a wish and a plan. Some of the cups hold real opportunities; others are only clouds.

Keywords: choices, fantasy, illusion, wishful thinking

Seven of Cups reversed

Reversed, the clouds part. It can describe finally seeing which option is real, cutting through confusion, or choosing one path and letting the others go. The card favours that focus, even if it means giving up a fantasy you enjoyed.

Keywords: clarity, focus, a decision made

In love

Many options, or idealising someone you barely know. The card asks you to look at the person rather than the picture. Reversed, it describes seeing a relationship clearly, for better or worse.

At work

Many ideas, scattered focus, or plans built on hope rather than facts. The card favours testing each option against reality. Reversed, it suggests a moment of clarity about what to pursue.

When you are deciding

Write each option down with what it would actually take. The Seven of Cups suggests dropping any choice that only works in your imagination, then choosing among what is left.
