Minor Arcana - Cups

Eight of Cups tarot card meaning

Eight of Cups

What the card shows

A figure in a red cloak, leaning on a staff, walks away at night towards dark mountains. Behind, eight cups are carefully stacked, with a gap where a ninth might go. Above, a moon with a sad face watches. The figure does not look back.

Eight of Cups upright

The Eight of Cups is the card of leaving something that no longer fulfils you, even though it is not broken. It describes walking away from a situation, relationship or ambition in search of something deeper. Upright, it favours the courage to go, and accepts that the reasons can be hard to explain to others.

Keywords: walking away, seeking more, disillusion, leaving

Eight of Cups reversed

Reversed, the figure hesitates at the edge. It can describe fear of leaving, trying one more time, or drifting away without any clear purpose. The card asks whether staying is a choice you are making, or a choice you are avoiding.

Keywords: fear of leaving, aimless drifting, trying once more

In love

Leaving a relationship that feels incomplete, or wanting more depth than you are getting. The card treats that longing as real. Reversed, it can describe staying out of fear, or walking away too quickly.

At work

Leaving a job that looks fine on paper but feels empty. The card favours finding meaning over keeping up appearances. Reversed, it suggests checking whether what you need could be found where you are.

When you are deciding

Ask what is missing, not only what is wrong. The Eight of Cups supports leaving when the answer is something you cannot find where you are, even if others think you are mad to go.
