Three of Swords tarot card meaning

What the card shows
A red heart hangs in a grey sky, pierced by three swords. Rain falls in straight lines from heavy clouds behind it. There are no people in the picture. It is one of the plainest and most painful images in the deck.
Three of Swords upright
The Three of Swords is the card of heartbreak. It describes grief, betrayal or a painful truth that hurts to hear. It does not soften that. It also does not say the pain is permanent. Upright, it asks you to let yourself feel the hurt rather than argue with it. Rain falls, and rain also stops.
Keywords: heartbreak, grief, painful truth, sorrow
Three of Swords reversed
Reversed, the hurt is starting to ease. It can describe recovering from a loss, forgiving, or letting go of pain you have carried for a while. It can also describe grief held in so tightly that it cannot heal. The card asks whether the hurt has been spoken about to anyone yet.
Keywords: recovery, forgiveness, releasing pain
In love
Heartbreak, a painful separation, or hurtful words. The card acknowledges the grief directly and does not hurry you past it. Reversed, it describes healing and the slow return of trust.
At work
A painful setback, a disappointment, a conflict that wounded. The card favours acknowledging the hurt before deciding what to do. Reversed, it suggests that you are ready to move past it.
When you are deciding
Avoid making a big choice in the first rush of hurt if you can wait. The Three of Swords asks you to let the pain settle enough that it informs the decision rather than making it.
