Minor Arcana - Swords

Two of Swords tarot card meaning

Two of Swords

What the card shows

A woman in white sits on a stone bench with a blindfold over her eyes, holding two long swords crossed over her chest. Behind her lies a calm sea with rocks breaking the surface, and a thin crescent moon hangs in the sky. She is perfectly balanced, and she cannot see.

Two of Swords upright

The Two of Swords is the card of a choice you are avoiding. Two options are balanced so evenly, or feel so uncomfortable, that you have shut your eyes to both. Upright, it describes a stalemate that feels like peace and is not. The card asks you to take off the blindfold, gather the information you need, and choose.

Keywords: indecision, stalemate, avoidance, a difficult choice

Two of Swords reversed

Reversed, the balance breaks. It can describe new information forcing a decision, or the stress of holding two impossible options becoming too much. It can also describe finally choosing. The card favours that release, even if neither option is perfect.

Keywords: information arriving, overwhelm, a choice finally made

In love

Uncertainty about a relationship, or avoiding a conversation that needs to happen. The card asks you to stop protecting yourself from the answer. Reversed, it describes clarity arriving, sometimes uncomfortably.

At work

A stalled decision, conflicting priorities, sitting on the fence. The card favours gathering the facts and setting a deadline. Reversed, it points at a choice that can no longer be postponed.

When you are deciding

If both options seem equal, you may be missing information. The Two of Swords suggests finding it, then deciding by a date you set. Not choosing is also a choice.
